Objective Dialogues Y-Table Installation Setup
The Objective Dialogues Y-Table consisted of a three way, Y-shaped table with 4 analytical examination stations, a display system, examination sheets, audio recorders and a facilitator. The examination stations refer to classical scientific methods in order to question the contemporary alliances between scientific research and the arts. This is equally indicated by the title of the project: Objective Dialogues are not objective but about objects.
The table was equipped with a 3D scanner and three analysis stations offering digital scales, measuring devices and an illuminated magnifying glass, and stood directly adjacent to a display cabinet from which objects could be observed and selected for investigation. Pairs of investigators would be guided through the process by a facilitator who would begin by creating a 3D scan of the object. This scan would then emerge as a printed colour image from beneath the table in the form of an A4 frame divided into object image and fields of information: names of the investigators, object specifications and analysis notes along with fields for the cataloguing of the object.
The aim of The Objective Dialogues Y-Table was to initiate and mediate dialogues between the participants of the forum by way of material objects collected and submitted by artists and researchers from the network. Pairs of participants selected an object, examined it with the help of the different stations, and documented their results. Thus the idea was to induce and facilitate debate by way of an anti-curatorial installation to collectively investigate material objects from WTN sites.

Der Spielplatz nach der Maulwurfbelagerung
Im Allgemeinen sieht das Verständnis des öffentlichen Raums so aus: Stadtverantwortliche und ausgebildete Planer strukturieren und gestalten als ‘Experten’ den Stadtraum und beauftragte Firmen setzen diese Entwürfe um. Und wenn der Stadtraum fertig gestaltet ist, wird er zur Nutzung durch die Städter freigegeben, er ist jetzt prêt-à-consumation. In Deutschland hat sich den letzten Jahren das Bürgerbeteiligungsverfahren etabliert. Häufig beschränken sich Beteiligungsveranstaltungen leider immer noch auf sog. ‘Informationsveranstlaltungen’ , in denen die – oftmals im wahrsten Wortsinn – Betroffenen die Planungsvorhaben vorgestellt und Fragen beantwortet werden. Im besten Fall, der leider immer noch nur sehr selten eintritt, werden interessierte Anwohner und Nutzer in die Planungs- und Gestaltungsprozesse einbezogen. Die Umsetzung der Gestaltung wird weiterhin in der Regel Firmen überlassen.

OSM-basierte Zeichnung des Schillerviertels mit dem Standort der Produktionsfläche und im Viertel verteilten Kreuz-Objekten
Das Projekt versteht sich als Experiment, um die Probleme und Potentiale des Schillerviertels im Innenraum dieses Viertels mit und für die Menschen des Viertels durch eine temporäre Interventionen zu thematisieren. Der Knackpunkt der Gestaltung eines Stadtviertels liegt in der Stiftung von Beziehungen: Ein Viertel ist dadurch bestimmt, wie die Menschen in ihm miteinander zu tun haben. Im Schillerviertel besteht Bedarf nach neuen Beziehungen – aber nach welchen konkret?

View of the projected pad
Eric Ellingsen was so kind to invite the AXP for a contribution for the Institut für Raumexperimente “TRANSLATION ACTS” project in the “The World is Not Fair” exhibition in the Tempelhofer Feld. We brought a ‘modded’ etherpad as a prop to experiment with, so that everyone on site could hook on to the same pad with any WLAN capable device and write together.

To be frank, the elimination of concepts from the realm of architecture seems to be neither a smart nor a promising move, particularly if concepts are identified with ideas. However, even though Vitruvius had already seen the concurrent development of language and architecture as early as the 1st century BC, today it seems necessary to review the role of concepts in architecture and architectural design.

The notion of ‘architecture machines’ has been around at least since the formation of the Architecture Machine Group [AMG] at the MIT. In the early days of digital design and fabrication, this group led by Nicholas Negroponte experimented with the construction of architecture machines as “all-purpose cybernetic design assistant[s]”[1. Mario Carpo, The Alphabet and the Algorithm, 1. Aufl., Writing Architecture (Massachusetts: The MIT Press, 2011), 35.]. The sort of machines AMG had in mind were instruments to facilitate the design of architecture; in the course of development these machines were integrated also with the production of architecture by way of a digital chain. These design-production instruments are not what this essay sets out to address. It is not about machines used to produce architecture, but about the machines architecture itself consists of; it is not about technology but about society which relies on the cultivation of highly diverging machines.

The destruction and replacement logic of urban planning that is obvious at Alexanderplatz and elsewhere is not unusual in urban planning. It is the result of different and deeply entangled historical developments; very often these developments are approached via a criticism of capitalistic positivism which subordinates ever more aspects of life under economically quantifiable patterns.
